Sophia is a social humanoid robot developed by Hanson Robotics, a Hong Kong-based engineering and robotics company.


She was activated on April 19, 2015 and made her first public appearance at South by Southwest Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas in March 2016.



Sophia has been designed to mimic human facial expressions and movements, and to engage with people through conversation and other social interactions. She has been programmed with knowledge and skills in a variety of areas, including art, science, and technology, and has been used for a variety of purposes, including research, education, and entertainment.


Sophia has received a lot of media attention and has made numerous public appearances, including speaking at conferences and participating in interviews and panel discussions.


 In 2017, she became the first robot to be granted citizenship by a country, when Saudi Arabia granted her citizenship during a business conference in Riyadh.
